What is Second-Line?

If you're in New Orleans and you hear someone shout out Second-Line, get ready for the dance of your life!

The Historic Second-Line dance can be traced back to the 19th century and was known especially among the African-American community.  Once the tradition for all old New Orleans Jazz funerals the Second-Line as become Louisiana's own expression of dance.  In many respects it is like a conga line with a lead dancer and everyone else following in tow.  Add a little bling and the spices from the cultural gumbo that is Louisiana and you have a Second-Line!

Most all New Orleans natives use a second-line umbrella or handkerchief to help them with their expression of joy during the dance.  Twirl your umbrella or waye your handkerchief while shaking your hips is all that is needed.  There is no right or wrong way since it is an expression of the joy that is within you. 

Dancing the Second-Line can now be seen at Weddings, Anniversaries, Graduation, Football Games, Mardi Gras, Bachelorette and Birthday Parties.  It is done at all celebrations and enjoyed by everyone.  The dance has become so popular through out Louisiana that Brides and Grooms carry their own specially made umbrellas with guests joining them with their napkins and handkerchiefs.  It is not uncommon for New Orleans natives to carry a themed umbrella for special events or as an accessory to their costumes. 

So if you are planning a party to celebrate the spirit of New Orleans don't forget your Second-Line umbrella.  You will be the life of the party and the leader of the dance.
